How to Use Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Foundation

I've been an avid makeup user since I was 15 years old, maybe sooner. That being the dawn of makeup gurus displaying elaborate colorful eye looks, complexion was never the focus of my young mind. I had perfect skin then also so why bother with foundation. In my 20's I adopted a wild and free hippie lifestyle leaving me with nothing more than a single tube of mascara and lip balm. Still my cosmetic collection lay in wait somewhere in a cardboard box in a closet untouched. So after accumulating every brush I would ever need and watching enough videos I felt prepared for purchasing my first foundation at the age of 31.

I had just been asked to come for a last minute interview with M.A.C. and wanted to showcase what I could do when it came to makeup artistry. I went to the Sephora an hour before closing and asked for assistance choosing and matching a foundation. Please note this was also only my second or third time shopping with Sephora and first time buying actual makeup and not just Urban Decay Primer Potion.

This beauty advisor so generous with her tired time helped me see my own skin for the first time in my life. This was also the moment I realized my friends have been letting me run around using a concealer shade that was at minimum three shades too dark and also orange on me. Doesn't matter. Now, I had a good match in a foundation, concealer, and blush. All Haus Labs. The beauty advisor suggested the brand and I was on board (1. Lady Gaga is an icon to be supported, 2. Haus Labs has a great range for fair/light skin tones like mine.)

Okay so I've got the makeup. I've seen the videos. Big two pumps on my hand on a palette directly on my face and the foundation and the brush should do the magic. Yeah, I had never looked older, August of my 27th year. After a bit of trial and error here is the method I developed for the most natural and skin like application.

Skin Prep

Love your own life but I use a light weight hydrating serum, in this case NEOGEN Snail Mucin to prep my skin. I don’t typically use a face primer as I feel like it’s too much product for a natural finish and can cause clogged pores resulting in breakouts.

Additionally I always wear a layer of sunscreen under my complexion products because aging gracefully is sexy. My preference is the Innis Free Daily UV Defense SPF 36 because it’s lightweight and also cheap compared to other sunscreens.

Product Control

My biggest mistake using the Haus Labs foundation was using too much. About 1/2 a pump was plant for my face. I’ll demo this with a full pump and you’ll see how much product was left over. The goal here is to even out the skin. Not cover it. This will not make your wrinkles and age spots disappear and the more product you apply the more it will just look like makeup on top or in your wrinkles and age spots. Sorry. See my post There is no Magic Cream.

I’m using a medium sized face brush with a medium packed density. Dispense 1/2-1 pump of product onto the back of your hand or an artist palette. My brush is nothing special and something I've had for years. It's made from synthetic fibers.

Spread the product out on the back of your hand or artist palette with your finger and get a thin coating on your finger tip. Use your finger. I tried to do this with a brush and the product is more difficult to control. Product control is key to success in this process.

Application

Starting from the center of your face use one thinly coated finger tip and place four dots from the bottom of your eye socket diagonally ascending to your temple, coat finger tip again with product and repeat on the other side. Coat finger a third time and make three dots starting just between your brows moving up to your hair line. Go back for a small amount of product and apply two very sheet dots to your chin area. Use one for of excess product left on the fingertip near the nose under each eye.

Important detail, notice how the areas where I am placing product have lower movement. I’m purposely avoiding areas of my face that tend to wrinkle up the most. Keeping product thinner in these areas helps to prevent creasing of the makeup through the day.

To begin blending work in parting motions as opposed to swiping motions. Push the product into your skin instead of dragging it around. Patting/ dotting your brush with give you a more skin like finish. If you are swiping and rubbing the product is more likely to become streaky. For the center of my face and cheeks I am working in a downward motion. Trying to keep too much product from gathering around my under eyes and crows feet area. The areas you want to cover most need the least product.

For the forehead area I’m blending with the same patting motion, pressing product into my skin, working first upwards, then side to side.

Chin area I’m blending product with same patting motion downward away from the crease in my chin.

When all the product is blended I got back with very light finger prints of foundation on areas where I want a little more coverage. I am very careful not to over saturate an area as it will quickly because cakey. I like to add a bit more light coverage to my under eyes, eyelids, and lower cheeks. Not often going back for more product but working with thin fingerprints and whatever product is on my brush.

This is where I am stopping. I have more even skin tone without covering my freckles too much. Dark areas have been lightened, and there is no product creasing in the folds on my wrinkle pride areas. Take note of how much product is still left on my hand from using 1 full pump. A full pump thought it may not seem like much is a lot of product and might to too much for a natural skin finish.

If you want this foundation purchase is directly from Haus Labs to help more intentionally support the artist behind the brand.
